Literary publications, webmasters, and other content rich commercial businesses are able to provide accurate and timely information to their subscribers or audience through interesting and thought provoking articles. Whenever you browse through a website that has informative, well written and meaningful articles on a particular subject of interest or flip through the pages of your favorite magazine trying to catch up on the latest trends, the engaging and interesting content was most likely created by a very competent writer.

What does a writer do?

A writer is a person with strong language, communication, and information gathering skills who is able to create compelling articles for the purpose of educating, and entertaining readers. An individual who chooses to become a writer has the option of selecting a career path that is based on their interests and expertise. There are many exciting niches available such as poetry, nonfiction work, prose, screenplays, and technical project proposals. Other fascinating genres include writing fiction books, magazine articles, product reviews, novels, or ebooks. A writer can be hired or contracted to complete author assignments, work as an editor, and conduct research.

Additionally, other common assignments include fact checking (entry level), preparing an advertising copy, sales page, or brochure (business writing), creating detailed instruction manuals (technical writing), interviewing people, revising or rewriting material, as well as selling articles to publishers (freelance writing.) Medical and legal writing may be an attractive option for those who have a background or relevant experience in these professions.

Ghostwriting is a good stepping-stone for beginners and experienced professionals who wish to further hone their skills and earn some cash at the same time. A client would hire an individual to write an article with the expressed understanding that all publishing rights must be relinquished. Copywriting is a potentially lucrative career path for talented upstarts and seasoned veterans who are daring enough to take the plunge.

Submitting a query to a magazine editor or publisher is one of the most rewarding and riskiest methods to get writing assignments. This can be achieved by following specific submission guidelines, which typically include outlining an idea for a proposed article and listing work related experiences and qualifications.

A writer who wishes to become a published author should always attempt to contact a reputable literary agent. Although there are many other cheaper and easier alternatives, a person that wants to get the attention of a major publishing house must sign with an agent who gets compensated through commissions only and is willing to share their client list or furnish verifiable references.

What are the educational requirements for a writer?

Many online and print media companies prefer candidates that have a bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or liberal arts. Some employers require a technical writer to have a degree in their chosen specialty, such as engineering, computer science, chemistry, etc. A writer is not required to be certified or licensed to work. However, individuals that specialize in certain aspects of technical writing are occasionally asked to obtain a professional organization certificate.

How does a writer promote his or her business?

In order for a writer to have a long and prosperous career, he or she has to consistently look for ways to promote their business. Having a website for the purpose of establishing an online presence is one of the best ways to attract new clients. The user-friendly site should have nice templates, distinguishable fonts, and a decent amount of SEO content. The URL must be relevant to the types of articles that are available on the web page, which would make it easier for potential clients to know what to expect. An auto responder service, feedback forum, traffic widgets, email address, and a newsletter are good interactive tools to encourage user inquiries and ultimately land writing gigs.

The website should also provide options for visitors to use a social bookmark or network widget. This would enable them to revisit the site at a later date or share it with others who might be interested in the writer’s services. The website link can be submitted for free to search engines, web directories, social book marking and networking locations, which will exponentially increase the amount of incoming traffic.

A writer can also promote their website through online article marketing. By posting content or pieces on free article submission directories that have a high page rank and include the website link in the author’s bio or signature box, a writer can expect a sizable amount of targeted traffic from hundreds if not thousands of visitors. The number of back links generated will substantially increase the website’s search engine rankings. This will produce sustainable traffic from visitors using specific keywords in the major search engines.

Another good SEO technique would be to post comments in a discussion forum that allows signature links. By regularly uploading helpful messages in forums that are relevant to a writer’s specialty, other users will be enticed to visit the web page. It’s important to keep in mind that adding value to a message board requires frequent participation in order to establish trust and credibility.

Posting free classified ads is an easy way to increase website exposure. Paying for advertisements on high traffic sites that publish relevant material will also point visitors back to the writer’s site.

Another very effective promotional tool for a writer would be to start and maintain a blog. This online journal is a perfect opportunity to showcase writing talents by uploading some interesting posts. Clients who require writing samples can be directed to checkout the blog. The URL can be submitted for free to blog search engines or directories where it will be indexed under a specific category based on content. A writer can also post useful comments on other blogs as a way to encourage those owners to return the favor. This will also create high quality back links especially if the blogs visited are getting a good amount of traffic. Offering the option for visitors to subscribe to an RSS feed will keep them updated on the latest posts.

Joining an online writer’s group to share tips and offer assistance to other members may also attract new business. Sending out holiday cards to existing clients, attaching a business card and offering a discount for referrals will produce more leads.

Online content sites, webmasters, and major publication editors frequently sponsor writing contests. Most of these events require a writer to submit an article that is considered their best work. This type of event provides the person with a unique opportunity to impress organizers, get exposure, and enhance writing credentials. The best writing competitions allow organizers to publish submitted articles only once and contestants always retain full rights to their work.

For many people, becoming a professional game designer sounds like the ultimate job. Who wouldn’t want to get paid for creating complete imaginary interactive worlds? As it turns out, this dream can become a reality. However, it will require hard work, the ability to work long hours, and a willingness to be paid less than others with your same skill set. This is because the field of game design is very competitive, so succeeding is not easy. However, for those who really love it, there is no better career option.

Getting Started

So, how does one go about becoming a game designer? If you’re reading this article, you’re probably already following the first guideline, that is, to play games. Don’t just passively play games, though. Pay attention to what makes a game good, and a bad game bad. Pay attention to the interface, graphics, story line: anything that makes the game special. If you can start learning to identify these factors, you are on your way to learning some fundamental elements of game design. There are many books that cover this topic, and you should certainly be reading these. Try to learn as much as you can about game design with your own study.

However, you will never get a job designing games without some other skill sets. One of the best skill sets for an aspiring game designer or developer to have is the ability to program. Make it a point to learn to program, and learn to program well. If you’ve never learned to program before, start with a scripting language like Python or Perl. Once you learn this, you can move on to some other languages. As you are learning, try making little games yourself. Once you feel you’re ready, you should try to join a game mod team for one of your favorite games. A “mod” is a set of user designed content that expands an existing game. Some examples of mods include extra levels, extra missions or quests, or even entirely new games within an existing games. By joining a mod team, you will gain real-world game design skills. This experience can be added to resume when applying for game design positions. This is really good experience, as potential employers will feel like to see what work you have done by checking out the mod.

Formal Education

While self-study is critical for becoming a game designer, you’ll most likely want to get some formal training. Not every game designer has a college degree, but getting one is often a good idea. A common choice of degree is computer science, but there are always other options. Studying math, physics, and other hard sciences can be useful, especially with modern games that employ realistic graphics and physics. Alternatively, graphics design, human interfaces, and animation can also be good choices. Choose something you’re interested in, and try to excel as best you can while still keeping up with your own game development work.

Getting A Job As A Game Designer

While you are teaching yourself, you should be trying to make as many contacts as you can. Many a game developer has gotten the job offer by becoming prominent in a mod community. Many companies will look at these communities to see who the leaders are when looking to fill positions. Don’t limit yourself to this though. Make as many connections you can, keep a good up-to-date portfolio of your work, and always be marketing yourself. Starting a blog about game design and development and networking with others in the field can be a good way to get your name out there. Opportunity can come from any direction, so don’t limit yourself.

Also, don’t just limit yourself to working at some of the big game companies. There are many small, independent game companies that offer excellent opportunities for aspiring designers. There are also niche game companies, such as those targeted towards educational games. By thinking outside the box, you increase your opportunities for finding a job.

As you can see, the field of game development and design requires quite a lot of work to get into. It is not enough to simply get a degree and apply for a job. You take the initiative to improve your skills, and create quality work that people talk about. However, if you have the drive and motivation to become a game designer, doing this work should be fairly fun. Do keep in mind though that it will still be tough. Game designers often work long, grueling hours, but if you really love the work, you will be prepared to make the sacrifice. Keep playing those games, keep improving your skills, and someday, you might find yourself in the credits of the next game.

Many women dream of becoming an actress. Whether you aspire to being a Hollywood actress or simply take the stage at your local theater, being an actress can be a rewarding profession. However, as with most professions in the arts, there’s also a lot of competition for work. This article will help you plan the best path to becoming an actress. There are no guarantees, but if you follow this advice, work hard, and are lucky, you might just find yourself getting your dream job in acting

First of all, let’s talk about the different types of actresses. While many people imagine that being a Hollywood actress is the way to go, it’s important to keep in mind that there are many other jobs for actresses out there. You can be a film actress, a television actress, or stage actress. In fact, they are even amateur acting roles available, if you aren’t ready to make acting your profession just yet. If you are starting your journey towards becoming an actress, it might be a good idea to have some idea of where you want to wind up, so you can plan your career accordingly. It also helps to be flexible, as many actresses wind up doing a variety of different work.

Training To Become An Actress

To start your journey towards becoming an actress, consider beginning as early as possible. Naturally, you are already where you’re at in life, but there is no time to waste if you want to become an actress. If you are very young, be sure to take as many acting classes as you can in school, and join your drama club or local theater. This will get you some good solid acting experience early on. This can only help you as you choose to advance in your career. At this point in time, you should focus on improving your craft rather than trying to become famous. That can come later on.

As you grow older, continue to work and get trained in acting as much as possible. Some choose to go to acting school, while others just hire private acting coaches. You may also want to consider studying other performing arts, such as singing, dancing, or music. This will help round out your skill set, making you a more attractive proposition to potential clients. Many of the best Hollywood actresses are also accomplished singers and dancers. Becoming proficient in these tools can only help you.

Finding Work As An Actress

At some point, most aspiring actresses will move to Los Angeles. Since Los Angeles at the center of much of the film and entertainment industries, finding work here is easier than if you were living in another place. Keep in mind that this does not mean that it is easy to find work. Getting a career in acting is very competitive, so there will be many others out there facing the same dream you are. This can be exciting, but it can also be discouraging that there is so much competition. However, if you are serious about making a career, particularly a career as a film actress, Hollywood is the place to be.

When trying to break into the business, promoting yourself is very important. The first step you need to take it getting some solid head shots taken. Get several different shots, done by several different photographers. Be sure that these photographers are professionals known for delivering good work. Your head shots will make a good first impression when being looked over for work. Keep your resume up to date, emphasizing past acting experience and awards. Create a package containing this resume and your head shots. You’ll want to send this package out to casting directors, agents, and other hiring professionals in your area. You can find lists of agents and casting directors in and trade magazines and through online resources. Be sure to keep your eyes and ears out for potential opportunities, you never know what could lead to a job.

Always be networking. When you send in your packages, be sure to follow up with the recipients even if they did not give you any work initially. You never know when they might need someone with your unique skills, and keeping in touch will help keep you fresh in their minds. For most actresses, the dream is to get signed with an agent who will then begin to promote you. Of course, the agent will take a cut of the pay for any job you get, but these agents also have the necessary connections to get you good work. Connections with the business is all about, so the more you can get the better. Always be meeting people, and always follow-up with people you meet. This, more than anything else, we’ll help you find work as an actress.

As you can see, becoming an actress is no simple task. It takes hard work, perseverance, and great natural talent. However, if you’re always improving your acting skills, and networking effectively, you’re giving yourself the best possible chance of becoming an actress. It’s a dream that not many achieve, but with some hard work and good luck, it might just happen for you.

Being a model sounds like the easiest job in the world. You show up, put on some clothes, smile, and get your picture taken. Easy enough, right? Not so. The world of modeling is highly competitive and being a model is more than just having a pretty face. To become a model, you must have very solid self promotion skills, and be fortunate enough to have the right look for the job at hand. Fortunately, there are modeling jobs for people with a variety of looks, but this does not change the fact that you have to go out and find the job. Don’t assume that good looks alone will carry you through.

Speaking of looks, if you’re a model you will be expected to maintain your looks. This will require eating right and exercising regularly. For some types of models, such as fitness models, this might become almost a full time job in itself. Even if you are gifted genetically, eating right and looking your best will still help keep you looking your best and give you a leg up on the competition.

Incidentally, while it is good to stay in shape, not all female models have to be six feet tall and stick thin, and not all male models have to have rippling muscles. There are many different types of models that serve different purposes. The tall female supermodels that many think of are the runway models. These models typically have very strict height, weight, and figure requirements, but runway modeling isn’t the entire modeling world. There are models who only appear in magazines and publications, not necessarily showing off clothes (think the background people in ads). There are models who specialize in certain parts of the body, hand models being a classic example. There are swimsuit and fitness models, who are required to have very fit figures. There are even models who get to dress in flashy costumes and hang out at booths in trade shows (often known as “booth babes”). Limiting yourself to one area of modeling is a poor idea. Check out all the options, and find your niche.

Building A Portfolio

So, if you’ve decided to become a model, one of the first things you will need to take care of is getting a portfolio together. A portfolio is a collection of photos that show off your “look.” Your portfolio will show potential clients what kinds of looks you have to offer. To build a quality portfolio, you must be sure to work with a quality photographer. Look through the photographer’s own portfolio, and see if he/she can capture “the look” that you are going after. Build your portfolio from the work of several photographers, and choose only the very best photos of yourself to go in the portfolio. It is often useful to ask the photographer which photos are best, since he/she will have a good eye for what photo editors will be looking for as they go over your portfolio.

Use a variety of different photos in your portfolio. You want to have some solid headshots, full body shots, and perhaps some “arty” pictures. You want to give prospective clients a very good idea of what you have to offer. Variety and quality are key.

Now, building a portfolio from multiple quality photographers could be tricky. Some photographers will work on a “trade for pictures/CD” (abbreviated TFP or TFCD) basis. These means that you give them your time in exchange for photos of yourself to use in your portfolio. With this arrangement, both parties get photos for their portfolios. Not all photographers will do this, though. Also, it pays to be careful which photographer you choose. Try to find one with a good, professional reputation who is known for doing solid work. It is unfortunate, but there are some sleazy “photographers” out there who don’t have your best interests in mind, so do your homework. However, most are professional, and will help you greatly in building up a high quality portfolio.

Marketing Yourself

So, you have a portfolio, now it’s time to start getting your name out there and find some work. There are two approaches to doing this. One is to strike out on your own and find work, the other is to find an agent who will get you work in exchange for a cut of the money. Let’s talk about the first method now, freelancing. If you are freelancing, you will need to become a skilled marketer. Develop a web presence, which will probably require the help of a professional developer. Make sure your site is well targeted to what you offer. To help you get found in search engines, consider the keywords you put in your title. For example, don’t just call your site “Sarah Evans Modeling.” Instead, go for something like “Denver Editorial Model – Sarah Evans.” This increases your chances of being found by a random search, since it is rare that someone will search for just your name until you are well known.

You can also join sites that connect models with photographers, editors, and others. See the resources below for some of these. Be careful on these site to make sure that you are dealing with legitimate professionals, and not scammers. However, wise use of these sites can definitely help you find some jobs to start with. They might not be the best, but they can get you going. Once it starts going well, you might even find yourself an agent.

And, really, finding an agent or agency is hitting the big time in modeling. With an agent, marketing becomes their job, leaving you free to focus on the modeling. Of course, the agent will be taking a cut of your fees, but most successful models will ultimately wind up with an agent or get signed to an agency. In order to get signed with either of these, you need to have a very solid portfolio and have the perfect “look” that is needed at a given time. To accomplish this, you will need to market yourself well at the beginning, using the techniques above. So, ultimately, becoming a model is all about becoming a good marketer.

Stay Smart

No discussion of becoming a model is complete without talking about avoiding scams. Since some many people want to break into modeling, there are many scammers out there try to cash in on this dream. Don’t let them do it. To avoid scams, be sure to hold on to your common sense. Get everything in writing. Search for the party in question on the internet, and see if there have been any complaints. Ask for references and check them out. Most people out there are legitimate, hardworking people, but there are a few scammers out there that will take your money and leave you with nothing. Doing a little homework goes a long way in avoiding this.

So, that is a basic outline on how to become a model. It’s not an easy path, and it’s more about marketing and promotion than it is about being really, really good looking. However, for those who can make it, it can be a very rewarding career.
